That’s a very normal thing to watch for. Most babies begin brief eye contact around 6–8 weeks and make more intentional, back-and-forth social eye contact by about 2–3 months.

In the birth–3 month stage, try:

• Hold your face about 8–12 inches away during feeding, diaper changes, or calm alert time.
• Talk, smile, then pause a moment—give your baby time to look back.
• Notice the pattern over days, not one sleepy or overstimulated moment.

Call the pediatrician this week if your baby is around 3 months or older and never seems to look at faces or track them, or if you also notice poor response to sound, loss of skills, or unusual eye movements. Eye contact alone does not diagnose autism or another condition.
