I need help with hospice

Answer

PensacolaCoPilot Preferred — Peoples Hospice Foundation / Peoples Health Services
For hospice care in Pensacola, call Peoples Hospice and Palliative Care of Florida: (850) 378-5618. Their Pensacola office is 213 E. Wright St., Suite B, Pensacola, FL 32501. The agency is Medicare-certified and serves Escambia and Santa Rosa counties; they can arrange an evaluation and explain eligibility, care at home, medications/equipment, nurse availability, and caregiver support. The affiliated Peoples Hospice Foundation also offers community support, including financial assistance and grief programs for Northwest Florida families.

You do not have to manage this alone. Hospice is usually appropriate when a doctor believes an illness is likely to be life-limiting—often a prognosis of six months or less if it follows its usual course—and the person wants care focused on comfort and quality of life rather than treatment aimed at cure. A hospice agency can speak with you before you commit and coordinate the needed physician certification.

What to do today

  1. Call (850) 378-5618 and say: “I need a hospice evaluation for my [relationship]. They are at [home/hospital/facility], and I need to understand how quickly care can start.”
  2. Have ready: the person’s diagnosis, current location, doctor/hospital contact, insurance or Medicare card, medication list, and your best callback number. Don’t delay the call if you do not have all of it.
  3. Ask these three practical questions:
    • “Is a nurse available 24/7 if symptoms worsen?”
    • “How are pain medicines, oxygen, a hospital bed, and other equipment delivered?”
    • “What respite and social-work support is available for the family caregiver?”

If this is not yet hospice: ask for palliative care instead. It helps with pain, breathlessness, stress, and care planning at any stage of serious illness and can sometimes be provided alongside treatment.

If there is a medical emergency now—severe trouble breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, a fall/injury, or you do not feel the person can be kept safe—call 911. If the person is already enrolled with hospice, call their hospice’s 24-hour number first; they can often send guidance or a nurse and help avoid an unwanted ER visit.
